Santa Monica Workshops

September 7-13, 2019

One-on-one with James Bonnet for seven days in the beautiful beach city of Santa Monica. Start a new project, develop a work-in-progress, take your story to the next level. Master the art of your novel or screenplay through an understanding of story.

Whether you are a professional or first-time screenwriter or novelist, this state-of-the-art storymaking workshop and private one-on-one sessions with James Bonnet in Santa Monica, which are modeled on the popular and successful workshop retreats in Nans Sous Sainte Anne, France, will give you the tools you need to create successful stories. Considered by many top professionals to be the leading authority and guide in all things related to story and storymaking, Bonnet will take you beyond Classical Story Structure, Three Acts, and The Hero’s Journey to a more complete understanding of the story principles you need to create story films and novels that are significant, enduring and have universal appeal.

As we begin our journey together developing your story, we will take an in-depth look at the essence of story – that without which there would be no story – and the hidden structures all great stories have in common. These hidden structures are intimately linked to the source of your creativity, are extremely powerful, and are the reason some great stories defy time and remain active and relevant for thousands of years and why others become classics, best-selling novels, or top grossing films.

Then as we continue our work together and fine tune your story, you will discover why there is such great power in the purity of the subject, experience how to create charismatic characters, narrative structures that will make your story truly unique, and high concept great ideas and log lines that will generate excitement and compel the right people to get involved.

So if you have a new project you want to start, one you need to finish, or anything in between, let’s meet in Santa Monica and take it to the next level.

On select evenings we will gather together to analyze an important film or book and enjoy laughter and stimulating conversations with new friends and colleagues over dinner and wine.
